Maratha caste is mainly found in the state of Maharashtra. They consist of mostly rural class of landowners, cultivators and soldiers. During British Raj period, an ethnologist wrote that Marathas are subdivided into 96 different clans. The people who spoke Marathi language were referred as Marathas. Marathas were the soldiers serving in the armies of Deccan sultanates. Shivaji was the one to establish Maratha Empire in the mid-1960s by conquering Desh and Konkan region from the Adilshahi. Marathas were categorized as a "martial race" by the British. Marathi is considered as an Indo-Aryan language. Marathi's were given credit for ending Mughal Empire in India. Marathi Hindus celebrate Hindu festivals like Dasara, Diwali and Raksha Bandhan. Due to the diversity of communities in Marathi society they also have a variety of cuisine. Each Marathi family uses its own combination of spices. In earlier time, Marathi women commonly wore the traditional sari whereas middle aged and young women in urban Maharashtra dress in outfits like skirts and trousers.

In Marathas, there is a tradition of associating father's name with the child's name and in the case of married women; husband's name is associated generally. Marathi people have a literary tradition which began in ancient era. Dnyaneshwar produced first treatise in Marathi.
