LoginShashanka dynasty was named after the great ruler Shashanka also known as Sasanka of the Bengal region. Under the leadership of the Shashanka, Bengal saw an impressive growth in the political as well as in the sector of financial development. It is believed that Shashanka ruled between 600A.D. to 650A.D. King Shashanka became the king of Gauda after liberating it from the hands of later Guptas in around late 606A.D.and after the conquest he started to spread his empire in Orissa, central provinces, Bihar, southern part of Bengal.
Before the rise of the Shashanka dynasty, Bengal was divided into three main regions, Banga, Samatata, and Gauda, which was ruled by the king of the Gauda empire which was later taken over by king Shashanka. The major contribution of the king Shashanka in the history of Bengal was the freedom of the Gauda empire from a very powerful northern military, because of this mighty display of power and his strength in the battlefield he is also known as the lord of Gauda. He issued gold and silver coins in the region and other places to enhance the financial status of the dynasty.
From some of the evidence found of the 12 th century it is believed that king Shashanka was an oppressor of Buddhism and has destroyed the Buddhist stupas of west Bengal. King Shashanka made the Shashanka dynasty strong enough in the matter of political region and he is succeeded by his son, Manava, who was believed to rule the kingdom for a very short period of eight months.
