"The word khatik is derived from Khatika word of the Sanskrit language". The Sanskrit word khatika means hunters or butchers and so as per the origin of the word the khatik community people are believed to be occupied in the butchering business. There are historical traces of khatik community people having a kshatriya descendent and that they were warriors but have to follow the path of butchering due to certain ancient history, they were assigned the task to kill animals for bail offering in yagya performed by the kings to impress the god and goddesses even today only khatiks has the right to kill animals during the bali offering ceremony at the sacred places, mainly Hindu temples. The history of migration of the khatik community people dates back 200 years as they have migrated from Delhi and other northern parts to the neighbouring states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The khatik is a large community of butchers and is widely distributed in northern India and hunters and they are spread throughout Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujrat, Chandigarh, etc.

As per the history there were certain claims by the khatik community that they use to supply meat to the rulers and people of high ranks in the Haryana and Delhi region until they migrated to different places. The main and current occupation of the khatik community people continues to be slaughtering, butchering and sale of goats and sheep meat.

Most khatiks are pious Hindus and worship all prominent god and goddess but are believed to be the worshiper of Goddess Durga majorly. The khatiks are very adaptive in nature and have adapted the culture and essence of the place they have migrated to like Sikh khatiks celebrate Sikh festivals like lohri, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Muslim khatik celebrate Id and muharam and visit dargah(mosque) to pray and seek blessings from the almighty.
