The origins of Satavahana dynasty is a mystery and a debatable topic among the historians. Below are few theories on the origin of Satavahana dynasty:
As per the Puranas, Satavahana dynasty overthrew the Kanva dynasty and after the Maurya era, Satavahana dynasty bought peace to the Deccan region.
Simuka with the aid of Bhojakas and Rathikas destroyed the Shunga Power. Thereafter he established the Satavahana dynasty and ruled for 23 years.
Kanha beheaded Simuka and became the second ruler of Satavahana dynasty and extended to south. Satkarni-I also known as Sri Satkarni, succeeded Kanha. He was the son of Simuka, and known as Lord of Dakshinpatha.
Satkarni II is considered to be the king who ruled Satavahana dynasty for the longest duration. Lamobodara succeeded Satkarni II.
Apilaka succeeded Lambodara and later some other rulers succeeded Apilaka.
Hala was the 17 th and noteworthy ruler of the Satavahana dynasty. He is famous for compiling the text of love themes ‘Gatha saptasati’. The Shaka kings pushed the Satavahana dynasty towards south and occupied the western Deccan.
Gautamiputra Satkarni also known as the ‘Destroyer of Shakas, Yavana and Pahalava’ took back major regions that were lost by Satavahana dynasty.
Pulumayi-II succeeded Gautamiputra. He extended the empire till Bellary district of present Karnataka.
Administration:Satavahana administration was largely inspired by Mauryas. The kingdom was divided into areas called Janpadas which was further sub-divided into Aharas. Each Aharas had a ruler called Amatya.
Each Ahara was further divided into Grama which had a headman called ‘Gamika’.
The King has the sole right to mint coins. The provincial governor was called as Senapati.
The dynasty under Gautamiputra followed the four Varna systems. Languages:Based on the coins minted in that era, The Satavahana dynasty has Prakrit as well as South Indian languages.
Religion:The Satavahana followed Brahmanism. They also made donations to the Buddhist monks. The common people did not support any particular religion.
Decline:The decline of Satavahana dynasty started as a result of the rise of feudatories after Yajna Satakarni. Pulumavi IV was the last king of Satavahana dynasty.
