Kings and the ruling region:Rashtrakutas ruled major part of Karnataka, Maharashtra and some parts of Andra Pradhesh for two centuries.
There is a possibility that King Dantidurga ruled Berar from Achalapura (currently Elichpur in Maharashtra), and took control of the northern Chalukya empire by defeating the Karnatic army in 753. Krishna I succeeded Dantidurga and seized Karnataka and Konkan.
In 780, Dhruva Dharavarsha expanded the kingdom into a mighty empire which stretched from Kaveri River and the Central India.
After Dhruva’s 3 rd son Govinda III rose to the throne, the Rashtrakuta’s success was unstoppable. His military was compared with Alexander the Great and Mahabharata’s Arjuna. It was even said that his horses drank water from Himalayas and his elephants from Ganges.
Amoghavarsha was Govinda III’s successor. He made Manyakheta his capital and this was Rashtrakutas capital till the end of their empire. He always made friendly relations with his neighbors. He was called as ‘Ashoka of the South ‘, because of his artistic and peace loving nature. The empire started decreasing from the reign of Krishna II.
Indra III managed to recover the dynasty’s fortune to an extent. There after there was a succession of weak kings.
Krishna III was the last great ruler who consolidated the empire from Namrada River to Kaveri River.
Decline:In 972, King Siyaka from Paramara, attached the empire and plundered their capital. This happened during the reign of Khottiga Amoghavarsha. This lead to the downfall of the great Rashtrakuta dynasty. Indra IV committed Sallekhana which means fast until death (practiced by Jain monks).
